While awareness about nutrition is growing among Indian consumers amid the pursuit of better health and a balanced lifestyle, its impact on the daily diet remains limited. A study by PepsiCo India and Euromonitor International has revealed that adequate protein and fiber intake remains a major challenge in urban India.
According to a study conducted on 1,250 people in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Kochi, 70 percent consume less than 41 grams of protein daily, while 61 percent consume less than the required amount of fiber. Interestingly, despite awareness about nutrition, lack of proper information is also aggravating this problem. In the study, 60 percent of the people cited the high cost of protein and 57 percent cited the lack of convenient options as major obstacles. Dr. Ankita Marwah of PepsiCo India said, “Awareness alone is not enough. It is important to translate reliable nutrition information into practical everyday choices.”
Meanwhile, Dilip Radhakrishna of Euromonitor International said, “The conversation on nutrition should not be limited to raising awareness, but also to helping people understand their actual nutritional needs.” The message of the study is clear—according to accurate information, affordable, reliable and easily available food options are essential for better nutrition.
